COMPOST UWM DOT ORG. Welcome to the internet home of Act Everywhere's campaign to bring composting to UW-Milwaukee. Why Composting? Why Now? As members of an educational institution, we have a responsibility to educate the community on relevant issues in today's society. The university needs to model and teach the public sustainable lifestyle habits by practicing eco-friendly methods of disposal. Implementing a visible composting program will establish UWM as a progressive university with the drive to become environmentally sustainable. The benefits of composting campus-wide at UWM not only reach the University but the surrounding community and its organizations. For example, Growing Power -- a local urban farm -- will compost UWM's food scraps, thus reducing the amount of waste that the university sends to landfills. Composting is already taking place in Sandburg Kitchens, so why not make the entire campus compost-friendly? Other universities, including UW-Stevens Point, and entire cities have large composting operations that we could easily use model our campus after. The current generation must be the one to tackle environmental and sustainability problems created by those who came before us. We must take the initiative, looking forward to create a future that we want to be a part of and that will be in the best interest of those who come after us. Composting reduces the amount of contaminants created from chemical fertilizers, helping the life surrounding the soil. Humus, the end result of compost, provides nutrients that a garden needs to grow in a healthy way. Adding food waste to soil also creates less garbage for landfills.
