 As the UFW efforts to unionize grape pickers grew, the campaign developed into a national grape boycott. The targets included college campuses as well as grocery stores, notably the Safeway chain. UFW Boycott Photos Student Involvement As part of their boycott strategy, the UFW sent activists all over the country to help students organize on their campuses and in their communities. In this video, former University of Washington student activist Erasmo Gamboa discusses his involvement. Gamboa relates his interaction with travelling UFW organizers and describes student efforts to organize grape boycotts at campus dorms and restaurants. High Profile Alliances The UFW also made a number of public relationships with high-profile figures, notably including Robert Kennedy. These relationships and endorsements brought attention to the UFW struggle and encouraged participation in the grape boycotts.  |
